How to register for a PhD program

Starting from the 2020 academic year, doctoral students are to complete the administrative registration process with UPEC. The doctoral college is managed by Paris-Est Sup.

While the administrative registration process is handled by UPEC, the doctoral schools in the Paris-Est Sup community are responsible for PhD admissions, re-registration authorizations, academic support, and training. UPEC has opted to maintain the current structure where its doctoral schools and the Doctoral Studies Department are combined with the other institutions of the university community. This is in order to ensure that doctoral students benefit from the diversity and quality of the doctoral training on offer.

For its part, UPEC intends to strengthen doctoral funding, provide doctoral students with good working conditions in its laboratories, enable them to gradually take on responsibilities, and open up career opportunities. Through its graduate schools and its overall strategy, UPEC aims to stimulate interdisciplinarity and interactions among disciplines. In this way, UPEC contributes to innovation by fostering a research culture that is open to varying world views, which in turn effectively prepares its students for the world of industry.

Application and Registration Procedures

Step 1: Contact a Thesis Supervisor and a Laboratory

Contact a thesis supervisor or a laboratory whose work best corresponds to your research project, and send them:

  • a one- to two-page thesis proposal
  • a detailed CV
  • copies of your diplomas

To identify UPEC laboratories and their corresponding doctoral schools, see the list of doctoral schools (French version).

Step 2: Apply Online

Once your thesis supervisor and the laboratory have indicated their approval, you can pre-register on the ADUM admissions website. The Thesis Committee will then examine your application, and may invite you to a meeting so you can present and discuss your research project. These meetings are essential if you wish to obtain a doctoral contract from UPEC (procedures may differ if you have another source of funding).

If the doctoral school accepts your application and it is approved by UPEC, ADUM will provide you with the information necessary to continue the registration process.

Step 3: Administrative Registration at UPEC

You will be notified by email if you are accepted into the program. The email will also provide the information necessary for you to complete the administrative registration process at UPEC.

The following will be provided:

  • The steps required to complete the administrative registration process
  • A form which you will need to complete
  • The list of necessary supporting documents
  • An informational file

UPEC’s Registration and Study Organization Unit (Service inscription et organisation des études, SIOE) will process your administrative registration once they have received your file, the necessary documents, and payment.

Your student card and certificate of enrolment (certificat de scolarité) will be sent to you by post once processing is complete.

After registration, PhD students will conduct their work in their chosen laboratory and will organize classes and their thesis defense with their doctoral school. PhD contracts already in progress will continue to be managed by Paris Est-Sup. New contracts signed starting this academic year will be managed by UPEC’s HR Department.

UPEC’s Joint Documentation Service offers assistance to PhD candidates in conducting research and other aspects of their program.

In order to register at UPEC, you must pay the following fees:

  • Student and Campus Life Contribution fees (Contribution Vie Etudiante et de Campus, CVEC): €100. This step is compulsory in order to begin registering at UPEC.
